At the dinner table last evening, I caught the little guy trying to hide some food he didn’t really want to eat from our sight … I was somewhat surprised since I had never seen him engaged in any act of deception before. Once we asked him what he was doing, he simply smiled (embarrassingly?) and eat the food item(s) in question.
At that time, I didn’t think much of it but it struck me a few minutes ago (while in the shower if you must know) that this could be the first evidence that he may have acquired the Theory of mind. His mom told me that she had seen him engaged in such behaviour before, so it’s probably not a recent development.
I say "may" as it seems that the use of deception may not be a true marker as this scientific paper seems to support. Still, this is a very exciting development.
Observing a child grows is truly an amazing (and yet too often frustrating) experience, I must admit.
